In many cultures polygamy is practiced. This is when one male has more than one wife.

It is the same with many species of mammals in the animal world; one alpha male with a number of females. Scientists are still debating whether this is the natural order for humans as well.

If given the freedom and the opportunity, many women indicate that they would also like to have a number of male lovers. Though cultures of polyandry (i.e. one woman with more than one husband) are rare they do exist despite the overwhelming majority of male-centered religions and cultures in the world.
