The sexual organ, both male and female, was a cult object across practically the entire African continent. It formed and essential part of the social fabric of most peoples. The force represented by the sexual organ was an integral part of all the cycles of life: birth, initiation into adulthood, marriage, and death. Objects representing the sexual organs played a role in religious ceremonies, initiation ceremonies and even in domestic life.
